TAMPA, Fla. - Drew Brees and New Orleans Saints wrapped up a disappointing season with a nice fourth-quarter comeback, one that actually may help NFC South rival Tampa Bay in the long run.The Buccaneers clinched the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, blowing a 13-point halftime lead on the way to a 23-20 loss on Sunday.Tampa Bay (2-14) will have the top pick for the first time since 1987, when Vinny Testaverde was the selection. Nearly 30 years later, the Bucs could be in the market for another potential franchise quarterback who also has a Heisman Trophy.Brees wouldnt bite on a question about how he and the Saints (7-9) may have lent a hand to the Bucs in landing a player theyll have to face twice a year in the future.I cant really speak for them or (their) draft status or anything else, the New Orleans quarterback said. All I know is we came in to win this game, and we did.As promised, Bucs coach Lovie Smith gave more playing time than usual to some of his younger players, particularly in the second half, when the Saints outgained Tampa Bay 220 yards to 32.Brees shrugged off three interceptions, two of them in the third quarter, to lead a pair of scoring drives to get the victory. Mark Ingram scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter, and Brees threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Marques Colston to put the Saints with 1:57 remaining.Tampa Bay had a number of young players on the field, both offensively and defensively during the second-half collapse. The Bucs were unapologetic about the way they locked down the No. 1 pick. They began the day tied for the leagues worst record with Tennessee, which lost to Indianapolis to also finish 2-14.I dont think anybody tanked it. We played the guys we played to rotate guys in and give them a look, Tampa Bay quarterback Josh McCown said. As far as players are concerned, the draft, that stuff is not relevant as far as how were playing. We execute the plays that are called. We competed hard and thats the main thing. Got a chance to evaluate some younger guys as we build this thing.Smith reiterated the plan going in was to substitute a lot. With the lead, if you play pretty good defence, you should be able to hold onto that, Smith said. They made a couple big plays at the end.Doug Martin rushed for a season-best 108 yards and rookie Mike Evans set a Tampa Bay record with his 12th touchdown reception for the Bucs (2-14), who went 0-8 at home and 0-6 against NFC South rivals.Mark Ingram scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter, trimming New Orleans deficit to 20-14. Keenan Lewis interception and return to the 50 led to Brees TD pass to Colston to make it 21-20.It was the 68th time Colston has caught a TD pass from Brees, giving the tandem sole possession of fifth place on the all-time list for most scoring pass plays by a quarterback-wide receiver combination. You couldnt have scripted a better ending, I guess, and we were all aware of it, Brees said.Peyton Manning and Marvin Harrison top the list with 112, followed by Steve Young-Jerry Rice (85), Dan Marino-Mark Clayton (79) and Philip Rivers-Antonio Gates (74). Brees and Colston had been tied for fifth with Manning-Reggie Wayne.Theres some pretty prestigious names on that list, Brees said. Rarely do you get that type of longevity with one person. Some highlights and lowlights to disappointing seasons for the Saints and Bucs.POOR PROTECTION: McCown was sacked three times Sunday, once by Junior Galette for a safety that made it 23-20. Bucs QBs were sacked 52 times this season, most since Trent Dilfer and Casey Weldon were taken down 56 times in 1995.PUZZLING SAINTS: New Orleans won its first three home games, then lost the last five. Thats in stark contrast to losing the first four on the road, then rebounding to win four straight away from home.RESILIENT: Brees beat the Bucs twice this season, despite throwing three interceptions in each game.HISTORY-MAKERS: Evans and Vincent Jackson caught passes on the first two plays of the game, making them the first tandem of Bucs receivers to top 1,000 yards in the same season. Its the fourth straight 1,000-yard season — third with Tampa Bay — for Jackson, who left the game later in the first quarter and did not return. Evans 12th TD reception set a franchise single-season record for receiving TDs.NO. 1: The Bucs, who went 0-8 at home and 0-6 in the division, need a quarterback. Could one of the past two Heisman winners — Oregons Marcus Mariota or Florida States Jameis Winston — be in the teams future?___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL Lindsey Horan Jersey . Unfortunately for the Cleveland Cavaliers, James Harden was in the building. Crystal Dunn Jersey . Grimes signed a $32 million, four-year contract to remain with Miami. The deal, which includes $16 million guaranteed, rewards Grimes for his recovery from an Achilles tendon injury that forced him to miss almost all of the 2012 season. http://www.uswntproshop.com/c-17-megan-rapinoe-usa-jersey.aspx. Nikolaos Kounenakis has been hired as an assistant coach, the team announced on Monday. Christen Press Jersey . - Free agent defensive end Will Smith has signed with the New England Patriots. Becky Sauerbrunn Jersey . Henderson (20-3) received winning scores of 48-47 and 49-46, and the other judge scored it 48-47 for Thomson (20-6). The announcement drew boos from the United Center crowd. "Train this hard for this long, its such a long camp and I see my title shot disappear," said Thomson, who fought most of the fight with a broken right hand.HAMILTON, Ont. -- The Hamilton Bulldogs are focused on keeping their composure period by period as their season winds down. Christian Thomass second-period goal stood as the winner and Dustin Tokarski made 27 saves as the Bulldogs defeated the Abbotsford Heat 2-1 on Wednesday in the American Hockey League. "Tonight we stayed composed, even when we thought we had another goal in the third period," said Hamilton head coach Sylvain Lefebvre. "We kept working, and we have to get used to playing those tight hockey games. "Thats what gets you to the playoffs, and thats what helps you win hockey games when you get there." A post-season berth is far from Hamiltons grasp, however. The Bulldogs remain 10 points back of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference, with just 14 games to play. Mike Blunden and Gabriel Dumont also scored for Hamilton (27-30-5). Chris Breen had the lone goal for the Heat (34-23-7), who have lost 10 of their last 11 games. Aaron Dell stopped 36 shots. Michael Bournival made his debut for the Bulldogs on Wednesday, having been sent to the team by the Montreal Canadiens a day earlier on a conditioning assignment. After playing 50 games for Montreal in his rookie season, the forward suffered a concussion in a Feb. 6 game against the Vancouver Canucks, and was cleared for contact on March 14. His insertion in the Bulldogs lineup provided a much-needed boost to the top line, and the combination of Bournival, Sven Andrighetto and Thomas used its speed to great effect against the Heat in the first period. Thomas was very pleased with the lines first game together, and felt comfortable playing alongside Bournival, who he came across several times at the junior level. "Its always tough playing with a new guy, but (Bournival) fits in really well and brings a lot of speed," he said. "Ive known him for a long time, and grew up playing with him at world junior camps. "Ive seen him quite a bit, and obviously he has some NHL experience. But he plays a hard game and that always helps your line." Hamilton was getting the best of play, but it was Abbootsford that opened the scoring at 8:56.dddddddddddd Ex-Bulldog Corey Locke controlled the puck below Hamiltons goal-line, and connected with the open Breen as he glided into the high slot. The defenceman released a mid-range wrist shot that Tokarski only partially connected with, and the puck trickled over the goal-line. It was Breens first goal of the season. Pressure did eventually pay off for Hamilton, as Blunden stole the puck from Abbotsford defender Shane OBrien to create an equalizing goal. The winger moved in alone on Dell and shifted from backhand to forehand before lofting a shot over the far shoulder of the goaltender at 17:55. Blunden nearly scored his second of the game with 10 minutes to play in the second period, as Dell kicked a Morgan Ellis slap shot from the point out to his right and the winger narrowly missed a tap in attempt at the post. Thomas did better with Hamiltons next scoring chance, as the Bulldogs took the lead at 12:42. After a period and a half of successful forechecking, Hamiltons top line got on the board when Bournival fought off a defender along the right wing and fired a low wrist shot that Dell knocked into the path of Thomas to his right. The rookie winger did the rest, slotting a quick shot past the sprawling goaltender from close range. Consecutive penalties to Nathan Beaulieu posed a late challenge for the Bulldogs, but their penalty killing unit responded well to hold the lead through 40 minutes of play. Hamilton entered play on Wednesday with an 18-0-1 record when leading after two periods. Tokarski did his part to preserve the lead, snatching a Max Reinhart wrist shot out of the air from point blank range with just under six minutes to play. His save was rewarded at the other end of the ice, as Dumont was awarded a penalty shot after being tripped with a clear path to the net, and made good on the chance. Slowly skating toward Dell, Dumont stopped abruptly and shifted to his forehand to tuck the puck in behind him at 16:01 of the third period. Neither team made use of their power plays on Wednesday, as Hamilton went 0 for 2 while Abbotsford was 0 for 3.
