With the Senators facing the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight, I figured I would try and answer three questions about the Ben Bishop-Cory Conacher trade from earlier this year. 1. Did the Senators trade the wrong goalie? Lets make one thing clear: The Ottawa Senators acquired Ben Bishop from the St. Louis Blues for one reason and one reason alone. They wanted to push Robin Lehner and create an internal competition for him back in the spring of 2011. At no point did the Senators truly believe that Bishop was in their long-term plans. The ideal scenario in Ottawa was always to have Craig Anderson hold onto the No. 1 job for a while and then gradually hand over the job to Lehner. Bishop was always viewed as an intermediary; a transitional netminder who could help bridge the gap when Lehner wasnt ready. But now there is a revisionist theory floating around Ottawa suggesting that the Sens should have traded Craig Anderson while his value was sky-high last season and they could have hung onto a tandem of Bishop and Lehner. To be clear, under that scenario, the Sens would be going into this season with a pair of goalies who had a combined 70 games of NHL experience. That would be a massive, massive gamble for any organization to take – especially one that viewed itself as a darkhorse contender in the conference. Yes, Craig Anderson has been off to a slow start this season, but lets not forget that he has been arguably the best goalie in the history of this franchise over a span of 100 games. Six months ago, if you were to rate the ceiling on the three goalies Ottawa had last season, Bishop would come in third every time. The Senators made the choice of trading Bishop out of that three-headed monster last season because Anderson was providing superior goaltending at a discounted price. Remember that Bishops job was merely to push Lehner a little bit internally and from that standpoint it was mission accomplished. Imagine if they traded Anderson away and he was having a Vezina-calibre season for another team while the Sens were this mess defensively. What would people say then? Probably that they needed a veteran presence in goal and that they shouldnt have traded Anderson. 2. Why did the Senators trade Bishop within the division? On this point, I can see a valid argument for sure. If Ottawa had options, obviously it would have been in their best interests to move Bishop away from the Eastern Conference – and specifically the newly formed Atlantic Division. Remember when the Los Angeles Kings moved Jonathan Bernier this summer, they made sure to trade him to the Eastern Conference. Same goes for the Canucks who ensured Cory Schneider wouldnt impact their own playoff positioning by sending him to New Jersey. But heres a question: Why did the Columbus Blue Jackets trade Steve Mason to the Flyers at the deadline last year, knowing they would be in the same division as Philadelphia this season? Well, they did it for the exact same reason why the Sens moved Bishop to Tampa Bay. The reality is that sometimes, you have to take the best deal on the table and hope that it works out for the best. If you recall, the Boston Bruins traded Andrew Raycroft within their division a few years and that worked out just fine for them. (Of course it helps that they got Tuukka Rask in return). 3. Why didnt Bryan Murray hold out for more? I can tell you with a great deal of authority that the Senators were pursuing a trade with the Flyers near the deadline that would have seen Ben Bishop traded to Philadelphia for Sean Couturier. That was the Senators first option and it looked like it may happen right up until 12 noon on deadline day. The Flyers had even claimed centre Adam Hall off waivers right around the deadline, making the Sens believe they were ready to part with Couturier under the right circumstances. But once the Flyers got cold feet, Murray had to look at his other options and he circled back to the Lightning. Yes, there was a deal on the table from the Oilers that would have included Ryan Jones, but the Senators needed some scoring up front. Murray wanted to land a player who could add some offensive punch to one of the lowest-scoring teams in the league, so he acquired Cory Conacher for Bishop. The other significant goalie who moved at the deadline was the aforementioned Steve Mason – who only cost the Flyers a third-round pick to acquire. And considering Mason had more than 200 games of NHL experience under his belt and had proven he could be a No. 1 goalie, the Flyers didnt give up too much in that trade. So the asking price for a goalie like Bishop wasnt going to be anything greater than a middle-round draft choice or a player like Conacher around the trade deadline. At the time of the deal, Bishop had only played 36 career games and had posted a 15-13-3 record with a 2.58 GAA. Even if the Sens hung onto Bishop for a few more weeks and tried to move him at the NHL Draft, he probably wouldnt have netted them much more – especially considering goalies like Jonathan Bernier and Cory Schneider were being aggressively shopped. Those goalies werent in play at the deadline, but were at the draft. The Devils paid a price of a first-round pick for Schneider, so let me ask this question: What would the Sens have gotten for Bishop at the draft? I dont know for sure, but I can tell you they wouldnt be getting a first-rounder. Bishop wasnt seen in the same class as Schneider or Bernier. This idea the Sens could have held out and gotten more for Bishop is pure fantasy. Ilya Samsonov Jersey .That sight softened the blow of what ended up as a 4-3 shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday night.Knowing their teammate was fine after a scary headfirst fall in the opening minute of the game helped calm the Maple Leafs. Nathan Walker Jersey .Y. - Phil Varone was the lone scorer in the shootout as the Rochester Americans edged the Toronto Marlies 3-2 on Sunday in American Hockey League action. http://www.authentichockeyshopcapitals.com/. In an interview with La Presse this week, the five-time Stanley Cup champion and three-time NHL scoring leader specifically took aim at wingers Thomas Vanek and Max Pacioretty, saying they cant show up in a 7-4 win over the New York Rangers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final and come up empty in Game 6. Alex Ovechkin Jersey . The same cant be said of last Saturdays 2-2 draw at Olympic Stadium against a very weakened New York Red Bulls side and one which had three stalwarts in Henry, Cahill and Olave back home in Harrison, NJ. John Carlson Jersey . It will mark the 22nd time the tournament has been held in this country and fourth in Atlanta Canada but will make its first appearance ever in played Nova Scotia. Will Goldberg or Brock Lesnar win Survivor Series mega match? Thats the big question heading into Sunday nights pay-per-view as the WCW legend and The Beast Incarnate do battle, 12 years after they first fought at WrestleMania XX. Check out the best bits of Goldbergs win over Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania XX in 2004. But much more will answered, too, with Raw and Smackdown engaging in a number of brand-on-brand brawls and the cruiserweight division potentially undergoing a seismic shift. Read the key questions below and then watch WWE Survivor Series, live on Sky Sports Box Office (channel 491) or Sky Sports HD Box Office (channel 492) from midnight on Sunday. WWE Survivor Series: How to order Booking details for Sundays pay-per-view Has Goldberg still got it?Goldberg looks in pretty decent nick and Paul Heyman, Rusev and a clutch of WWE security guards will tell you he still packs a punch - the legend has hit all of the above with spears, jackhammers and/or fists in the build up to his Survivor Series showdown with Lesnar.Yet, at 49 years of age - he hits the big 50 on December 27 - and without a match under his belt since he initially fought Lesnar way back in 2004 inside Madison Square Garden, will the former world champion be able to keep pace with The Beast Incarnate? Story of Lesnars comeback How has Brock fared since returning to WWE in 2012 Lesnar has seen off a raft of future WWE Hall of Famers since he returned in 2012 - John Cena, Triple H and The Undertaker to name but three - while he has only been pinned or submitted once, by The Undertaker at last years SummerSlam, since he lost to Triple H at WrestleMania 29 in 2013.But with Goldberg intimating that Sundays bout will be his final one as a professional wrestler, can he muster up some of the old magic and conquer The Conqueror again, having edged their first meeting 12 years ago with a spear and a jackhammer? Its a must-see main event. WWE has used video game WWE 2K17 to look at what could happen when Goldberg faces Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series. Will Undertaker appear? If WrestleMania is the WWE event most closely associated with The Undertaker, then Survivor Series runs it a very near second. The Fall Classic is where The Deadman made his debut in 1990 and won his first WWE Title in 1991, while no-one can match his 18 bouts at the show.It seemed like Survivor Series 2016 would be a Phenom-free zone - but the legends return on this weeks landmark 900th edition of Smackdown has led to speculation that he could appear in Canada this weekend to check out the blue-brands five-on-five elimination match against Team Raw. The Undertaker says Smackdown’s Survivor Series squad will feel his wrath if they lose to Raw on Sunday night. As well as claiming he was back to take souls and dig holes, Taker also warned Smackdowns squad that they would face his wrath if they slipped up against the red brand. With that in mind, will he help Team Blue win in Toronto - or perhaps beat the heck out of them if they dont?Where will the Cruiserweight Title end up?There will be more than just Cruiserweight Champion Brian Kendrick and his challenger Kalisto invested in Sundays match for Kendricks title, with the entire cruiserweight division set to move to Smackdown if masked marvel Kalisto is able to prise the belt from The Wizard of Odd. Brian Kendrick will defend the Cruiserweight Title against Kalisto If that happens, you can get used to Scotlands Noam Dar, plus the likes of Rich Swann, Tony Nese, Lince Dorado and Gran Metalik wrestling on Tuesday nights instead of Mondays, although the fact Kendrick is a sneaky so-and-so who is not afraid to bend the rules may give him the edge.ddddddddddddThe veteran taped TJ Perkins rope to the wrists and feigned injury as he ripped the title from The Fil-Am Flash at WWE Hell in a Cell, while he twisted Sin Caras mask around so he could not see while downing The International Sensation in a non-title tussle on this weeks edition of Raw. WWE Raw report Read what happened on Monday nights show Which brand is best - Raw or Smackdown?Aside from Kendrick versus Kalisto and the Intercontinental Title scrap between The Miz and Sami Zayn, there will also be three traditional elimination matches pitting red against blue - the aforementioned one Undertaker alluded to, plus womens and tag-team bouts.Smackdowns mens teams have an excellent record against Raw in matches of this type - they triumphed at both editions of Bragging Rights, in 2009 and 2010, and also won a brand-on-brand battle at Survivor Series in 2005, with Randy Orton emerging as a sole survivor. Ultimate Survivor Series team? Who would make your five-man squad? The contest ended up as a pseudo one-on-one between Orton and Raw legend Shawn Michaels after Bobby Lashley, Batista, Rey Mysterio and JBL (Smackdown) and Kane, Big Show, Carlito and Chris Masters (Raw) had been eliminated, before Orton downed Michaels with an RKO.Will there be a sole survivor?Orton, then, was the final man standing in 2005 - at least until he was attacked post-match by The Undertaker, who was still seething at being locked in a burning casket by the Viper and his father, Bob, a couple of months earlier at the No Mercy pay-per-view! Survivor Series moments: P1 The Shields debut and the first Elimination Chamber Match Survivor Series moments: P2 The rise of The Undertaker and the Montreal Screwjob The win came amid a three-year run of Orton being a sole survivor - he was also the last man left in 2003 while wrestling for Team Bischoff against Team Austin, as well as in 2004 when he captained a four-man squad to victory over a Triple H-led quartet. Can he repeat the feat in Toronto? The previous sole survivor to emerge was Dolph Ziggler, The Show-Off doing so in 2014 as Team Cena combatted Team Authority. It seemed as if Seth Rollins would be the winner when Triple H walloped Ziggler but then Sting showed up, to attack The Game and help Ziggler pull of the victory. Survivor Series stats Most wins?
